Paddy Power pays out big sum as punter strikes gold on Cheltenham

A horse racing fanatic from Sabden has struck lucky and scooped a massive £47,000 sum from an unlikely bet.

Dave Parsons has backed horses for over 25 years, but his years of experience couldn’t prepare him for the news that his £7 bet had won big.

The 51-year-old put a four way bet on at the Cheltenham Festival, which saw all four of his horses romp home to victory.

Dave, an avid Burnley FC said he had waited a lifetime for what he describes as the “big one”. He explained: “I kept saying ‘I will get it one day’ – most punters do. But Friday morning I went in with £20 in my wallet and by Friday afternoon I had £47,000 in my pocket.

“It is absolutely amazing. It has not sunk in yet.”

Dave put a “Lucky 31” bet on - which comprises of 31 individual bets determined by the stake – which needed outsiders Tiger Roll (10/1), Very Food (40/1), Don Poli (12/1) and Savello (28/1) to win their races during the Cheltenham Festival.

He watched the first three races, watching them power home for victory – which guaranteed him £1,400 before the fourth race even started.

However, he was sent into raptures when he listened to the last race on the radio, hearing that Savello had triumphed, pocketing him the huge sum.

He said: “I could not believe what the commentator was saying when Savello was coming through to win.

“Can you imagine being sat at home and winning £47,000? I ran out into the street screaming.

“I had to get someone I knew to check it was real.”

The £47,000 prize was the biggest that the Accrington branch of Paddy Power has paid out to a punter.

Dave, whose last big win was £2,800 16 years ago, popped to the pub shortly after the win for a celebratory beer and was greeted by cheers and applause from the locals.

“My lass Kath came to the pub thinking I had won £1,400.

“But when I came through the door of the pub everyone just started clapping – it was a real ‘Del Boy’ moment.

“When I showed her the cheque she was shocked.

“We are going to pay off all our debts and our mortgage which will leave me with around £30,000.

“We are going to book a holiday somewhere nice and I am going to buy Kath a new hoover.”
